Ecclesiastical Annals by Cesare Baronius
This work was published by Cesare Baronius from 1588 until 1607. It is a historical work written to counter the Protestant Centuries in which the Magdeburg theologians surveyed the history of the church in order to demonstrate how the Catholic Church had deviated from the beliefs and practices of the early church.
Baronius' twelve volume work surveyed each hundred year period up to 1198. He argued that the beliefs espoused by the Catholic Church during the Reformation had always been held by the church throughout the centuries.
Obviously, both Baronius' work and the Protestant Centuries were biased. This demonstrated the need for and led to the study of the science of historiography.
