| Significance | Mary I (or Mary Tudor) was the daughter of Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. During her reign as Queen of England from 1553 to 1558 she attempted to return England to Catholicism. She was sometimes referred to as "bloody Mary" because of her persecution of Protestants. |
